Bradford City Fire Remembrance Badges
The Bradford City Stadium fire occurred at the Valley Parade Stadium on 11th May 1985, 56 supporters died and at least 265 people were injured. In the aftermath the Association of Football Badge Collectors (AFBC) issued a Limited Edition Black Boar’s Head badge to raise money for the burns victims.
In 2010, I commissioned 3 separate badge issues to mark the 25th anniversary of the tragedy to raise money for the Bradford Burns Unit. The first set of 4 badges was a Limited Edition of 250 and featured the Boar’s Head shield in 3 different enamel colours, the 4th badge in the set was Silver and also sold as a single badge. Because the release was so popular and quickly sold out, I decided to commission another set of 4 badges as well as a badge that depicted the bronze commemorative sculpture that adorns the main stand at Valley Parade. The sale of all these badges raised in excess of £5000 for the Bradford Burns Unit.
On the 30th anniversary of the fire, I along with others, produced hundreds of Bantam’s flat caps, with specially designed Clare & Amber tweed. The first 250 caps came with a Limited Edition badge. This initiative raised just over £20,000 for the Bradford Burns Unit, now retitled the the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit (PSBRU).
Georgia Thornton (Bradford City Ribbons) initially made ribbons for family to wear at her Nana’s funeral. Subsequently Georgia started to make ribbons for the Bradford City fire memorial and has now made and sold thousands of ribbons in the last few years, as well as producing an enamel badge. Georgia has raised in excess of £25,000 for the PSBRU.
